Radio Controlled Car (RC)

Radio controlled cars come in two types, battery-powered, and engine-powered. At Hobby Corner we stock a range of both. Some cars come pre-assembled, just needing a final check over and a charge. Others need assembly with general modelling skills being an advantage. To run a battery car you will need a radio control unit - with batteries and frequency crystals, which allow numerous sets to be used at the same time, a power battery, (typically 7.2 volts) capable of being fast-charged, a charger for the battery - either slow or fast-working off the mains, or off a 12 volt car-type battery, the car kit, and with some cars, the paint. A range of tune-up parts are available including tune-up motors, high capacity batteries, electronic speed controllers and ball bearings. Run-time depends on use, but it is typically between 5 and 15 minutes, the run-time being shortened by the use of the faster motors. To run an engine powered car, or I/C as it is known, you need a radio control unit, as above, the car kit with an engine, some fuel and a glow plug with a glow starter and perhaps some paint. The glow plug is a small heater-type plug, similar to a spark plug in a petrol car, and its purpose is to ignite the fuel when the engine is running. The glow starter is a small battery-powered device which energises the glow plug, but is removed once the engine is warmed up. Run-time depends on the size of the fuel tank, but the advantage of the I/C car is the ability to just fill up the tank and carry on - but keep an eye on your radio battery - if they go flat you will lose control of your car, perhaps on full throttle !!
